Kennedy Home Transition/Parent Involvement Specialist

Federal Programs Department

Job Description

General Statement of Job:

School-aged children are placed at Kennedy Home by parents, guardians, and departments of social services.  This position serves as liaison between LCPS and Kennedy Home, acts as an advocate for these students and as a primary resource for the schools that serve Kennedy Home’s student population:  LaGrange Elementary, Frink Middle, North Lenoir High, and LC Learning Academy.  The Specialist assists these students by helping them to make wise choices and by implementing strategies to help the student to want to stay in school.  He/she also facilitates academic remediation services and helps students transition to new school settings, further education, and/or employment.  Students will receive extra academic support as needed at all three levels by in-school and after-school tutoring, and they will receive needed counseling at all three levels by the Transition/Parent Involvement Specialist.  This position reports to the Director of Federal Programs.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Help students transition from Kennedy Home to Lenoir County Public Schools, and from Lenoir County Public Schools back to their homes and home schools
  • Help students with postsecondary education and employment
  • Form strong collaborative links between all parties affecting the students.  That link in most cases for each student includes:  Kennedy Home (Administration, Case Managers), LEA (Administration, Teachers), Family (depending on students’ circumstances), and the students’ home county department of social services
  • Monitor the progress of each student—academically, socially, and behaviorally
  • Collaborate with teachers and staff to assess the needs of each student, to make sure each student is getting the required interventions necessary to ensure academic success
  • Coordinate after-school academic schedules such as after-school remediation.  Provide a schedule to Kennedy Home of students who will be staying after school at any site so all parties will be informed and transportation can be coordinated and provided
  • Coordinate activities at the respective schools that will prove beneficial for the students as they transition to new school settings.  Some of these activities include but not limited to: sports, organizational affiliations (FBLA, Gospel Choir, etc.), and Driver’s Education
  • Ensure that Kennedy Home has adequate materials and equipment that will meet the academic needs of their student population
  • Assist with the monitoring of expenditures and items to be reimbursed by LCPS to Kennedy Home (Title I, Part A:  Neglected Children funds)
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Federal Programs

Additional Job Functions or Assigned Tasks:

  • Monitor Kennedy Home students’ NC Wise information
  • Assist Kennedy Home personnel in understanding the policies and procedures of Lenoir County Public Schools, and assist Kennedy Home with any requests that help keep positive communication flowing between LCPS and Kennedy Home
  • Ensure school front offices have a list of Kennedy Home personnel and approved lists of people who can sign-out Kennedy Home students
  • Coordinate with the KH case managers and different county case managers of Department of Social Services to help students complete required objectives that might have been ordered (i.e., community service)

Minimum Training and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, social work or a related field preferred

Minimum Qualifications or Standards Required to Perform Essential Job Functions:

  • Ability to build a rapport with students, parents, and staff
